Learn4Work is a unique programme that uses the combined knowledge, expertise, networks and funding opportunities of partners in both Africa and in the Netherlands to improve vocational education in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda. The programme brings parties from various sectors together: schools and the public sector, but also NGO’s and the private sector.

The importance of vocational education

Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) helps young people to learn a trade, enabling them to find a job or to start their own business. In this way they have the opportunity to earn a solid income and improve their living conditions. At the same time, the economic development and food security of their communities and countries benefit as well.

Youth unemployment

For the best result, it is essential that vocational education is related to the demands of the labour market, and that the quality of the teachers, teaching method and curriculum is high. Many formal and non-formal vocational education institutes in Africa are unable to meet these criteria, which is one of the reasons why youth unemployment in these countries generally is very high.

The problems vary from the professional quality of the teachers to the relevance of the curriculum to local companies’ needs, and from the lack of equipment to the obstacles that youth from marginalised groups encounter when seeking access to vocational training.

Objectives of Learn4Work

Learn4Work aims to make a positive contribution to:

  • the number of young people who have the opportunity to learn a trade, particularly young people who are marginalised in any way
  • the quality of vocational training
  • an increased relevance of vocational training to the demands of the labour market

The projects which are supported by Learn4Work are always based on actual demand in African society.

Do you want to help fight youth unemployment? Edukans has developed the 7-STEPS, a tested formula that builds sustainable links between the local labour market, schools and training institutions. The result? Young people gain skills through relevant and high-quality education, while employers get the highly-skilled personnel they need. Interested in how it works?

What can Learn4Work offer you?

In the programme we use a range of selected strategies to support our partners:

Linking and learning
Learn4Work connects Dutch and African partners, including schools, teachers and students, but also sector agencies, companies, NGO’s, knowledge-based institutes and the public sector. The resulting public-private partnerships complement and strengthen each other, exchange knowledge and mutual expertise and together develop new expertise. This significantly boosts the impact of their projects.

Training and capacity building
Learn4Work regularly organises workshops and training sessions for the network of partnerships. These are based on experiences with good practice in the projects supported by Learn4Work and serve as an efficient way of knowledge development.

Coaching and advice
Learn4Work offers advisory and coaching services to the partnerships participating in the programme. Issues covered include guidance in the process of starting international cooperation projects, project management, monitoring and evaluation.

Learn4Work aims to raise awareness in Dutch society about the importance of vocational education in developing countries, starting with the parties which are directly involved in the projects within our programme. We also want to stimulate international entrepreneurship and the internationalisation of Dutch vocational education.

Adding value
Learn4Work makes global citizenship concrete. We help Dutch and African schools to introduce internationalisation in the class room and we stimulate the mutual exchange of ideas, knowledge and best practices.
